While the essence of travelling in a campervan revolves around travelling, the interior arrangement and styling of your van can’t be overlooked when it comes to comfort and functionality in your mobile home.
With multiple conversion layouts available, it can be hard to choose one without some understanding of what’s available and its benefits/drawbacks. In this post, you’ll find some of the more popular campervan conversion layouts as well as a bit of an explainer as to their functionality. Ready to dive in? Let’s do it.
Popular Campervan Conversion Layouts
- Fixed Rear Lengthways Bed:
Considered to be the most comfortable layout regarding sleeping space for a couple, the lengthway bed position tends to offer more sleeping space than a sideways bed. Storage beneath the bed is also increased due to the length-oriented design, offering plenty of space for larger items to be kept at the rear of the van. Rear access is available, however, you will need to crawl over the bed in order to get into the vehicle. With added bedding space often comes a subtracted kitchen and dining area, meaning folding/sliding tables & entertaining areas are often installed to accommodate the lack of fixed space.
Suited to: The solo traveller or couple looking to maximise rear storage and sleeping space. - Fixed Rear Sideways Bed:
Offering the ideal layout for a kitchen and dining area, this design fixes the bed sideways at the rear of the campervan in order to open up space toward the front of your vehicle. This design tends to shorten the length of the sleeping space as well as reduce the amount of storage space beneath the bed. Rear access is available, however, you will need to crawl over the bed in order to get into the vehicle.
Suited to: The solo traveller or couple looking to maximise kitchen and dining space. - Rear Double Seat with Roof Bed:
This layout favours passengers with a combination of two passengers in the front and two on a double seat in the back. Different vans offer varying seat functions, with some front seats able to swivel, while others utilise sofas along the side that run parallel to the double seat at the rear. This design also tends to include a fold-up dining table in the middle of the seats that can seat four people at once. The sleeping arrangement is designed so that the dining area can be converted into a queen bed once the double seat is flattened out, with some campervan conversions allowing for a roof bed. While the design offers more room for passengers, rear storage is sacrificed by the double seat as well as access only being available at the front of the vehicle.
Suited to: Couples, families, and groups looking for more passenger space as well as the option to include a roof bed if the campervan permits. - Rear U-Shaped Dining Area:
An ideal balance between kitchen/dining, storage, and sleeping allocation, this layout is oriented around a convertible U-shape made out of sofas and a movable dining table. This layout doubles as a vast living space while also providing an oversized sleeping area once the sofas are set down. Storage is maximised as the sofas offer plenty of space for bulky items, with the user needing only to lift the seats up or install slide-out drawers at the back of the van. This conversion allows for rear access, though you will need to crawl over the sofas.
Suited to: Most travellers, this campervan conversion provides the most balance of all the living zones within the vehicle
- Rear Twin Sofa Beds:
Suited to those wishing to sleep separately, this campervan conversion features two twin sofa beds and offers ample space to cook and entertain under a rear awning. A removable dining table is placed between the two sofas, providing a spacious area to prepare food and relax. Storage is also made available underneath the sofas, and the rear of the van is completely accessible due to sofas running along the length of the van.
Suited to: A pair of travellers looking to access the rear of the van as well as storage on the floor of the vehicle. - Rear Single Sofa Bed:
Ideal for storing bulky items such as surfboards and bikes, this conversion layout features one convertible sofa bed at the rear of the bed. Capable of sleeping a solo traveller or extending out to accommodate two people, this design offers the most room for a standalone storage solution (drawers/cupboards), as well as a fold-out dining table. This conversion allows for complete rear access.
Suited to: A solo traveller looking to maximise storage space for bulky items. - Front Bed and Rear Kitchen:
Suited to those wishing to do the bulk of their cooking outside of their van, this orientation places the bed at the front of the layout and the kitchen at the rear. The slide-out component of the kitchen area offers more headroom for cooking, as well as better ventilation. The front area is a hybrid of sleeping and dining, with a dual sofa and removable dining table setting able to transform into a queen bed by lowering the table to the height of the sofas. While it does allow for plenty of sliding drawer space, this design does not favour those looking to store bulky items at the rear of the van.
Suited to: A solo traveller looking to cook outdoors, this campervan conversion is aligned more with those who are looking to enjoy a mobile culinary experience.
Although many of these designs share similarities in their function and appearance, subtle nuances in layout can ultimately impact your traveling experience greatly.Ready to hit the road in style?
